What the Full Curl Groom actually is

Most grooming appointments are written to fit a breed average. We wrote this one around what the coat actually does when a Toy Poodle or a Cavapoo walks into the rain and then comes home to sit on a cream sofa. The full curl groom is a 90-minute appointment that begins with a coat assessment — every dog’s curl pattern is different, and two Maltipoos from the same litter can need completely different clip lengths.

After the assessment, your dog gets a warm-water soak with our sulfate-free Curl Definition shampoo (pH 6.4, same product we sell in the shop), a deep conditioner left in for eight minutes, and a warm-towel wrap before the drying table. We hand dry and fluff, working in sections. No high-velocity cage dryers: the only noise is the handheld.

The clip follows the breed-pattern lines — lamb clip for Toy Poodles, teddy-bear for Cavapoos and Maltipoos, continental option available on request for show dogs. We finish with a light coat spray (bitter orange, no silicone), photograph the result, and send you the photo before we call. Your dog should smell good and look like themselves, not like a trim done by someone who didn’t recognise the breed.

You drop off, we text. The 90 minutes are structured so your dog never sits waiting in a kennel — they go from your hands straight to the table.

Check-in & coat assessment

We greet your dog at the door, weigh them to confirm the tier, and run a five-minute coat check. Knots, coat condition, any areas to avoid — all noted before the water comes on. Repeat clients get their notes pulled up from the last visit.

Warm curl bath

Warm (not hot) water, sulfate-free shampoo worked through the coat in the direction of curl growth. The deep conditioner is applied after the rinse and left in for eight minutes while your dog gets a calm ear clean. No rushing — this part sets up the entire clip.

Hand dry & fluff

We work in sections with a handheld dryer set to medium heat. The fluffing happens here, pulling curl sections outward so the clip can follow the natural pattern. This is the step most grooming appointments skip — and it’s why coats look flat for the first week after a groom elsewhere.

Breed-pattern clip

Lamb clip for Toy Poodles, teddy-bear for Cavapoos and Maltipoos. If you have a reference photo or a previous grooming note with a specific length, we work to that. Paws, face and tail are done last — the parts your dog watches most carefully.

Finish, scent & photo

A light mist of our bitter orange finish spray, a final check for evenness, and a photograph. We text you the photo before we call to say your dog is ready. You collect, we note anything to watch for at home, and we schedule the next appointment if you’d like.

How often should I book a full curl groom?

Every six to eight weeks for most curly coats. Toy Poodles in a short lamb clip can stretch to eight; a Cavapoo kept in a longer teddy-bear style usually needs six. We’ll tell you at pickup which cadence we’d recommend for your specific dog’s coat density. Coming in more often than needed isn’t harmful, but going past ten weeks reliably means the coat assessment at check-in turns into a de-mat session — and that adds time and cost.
Yes, and please tell us in advance so we can book the first slot of the morning — fewer dogs in the studio, quieter, less waiting. We don’t use cage dryers, which removes the single biggest anxiety trigger for most dogs. We work slowly and take breaks. Bring a few high-value treats and let us know what works at home. For very anxious dogs, we sometimes suggest a shorter introductory visit (just a bath and blow-dry, no clip) before the full groom.
For the first visit: a copy of your dog’s vaccination records (rabies, distemper, Bordetella). After that, we keep them on file. Bring your dog on their usual collar and lead — not a retractable. If you have a reference photo for the clip length, a screenshot on your phone is fine. A favourite treat helps if your dog is nervous at check-in, though we’ll have some good ones on hand too.
We ask for 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule at no charge. Same-day cancellations are charged 50% of the booked service — this covers the groomer’s time that can’t be filled. No-shows are charged in full. If something urgent comes up, send us a message as early as you can and we’ll do our best to find a solution. We don’t enforce the policy rigidly for genuine emergencies, but it helps to know.
